Spring in MetroWest Massachusetts is the most important season for your lawn. After a long New England winter, your grass, soil, and landscape beds need attention to bounce back strong. Here at Roycroft Landscape Inc., we've been serving Medway, MA and the surrounding area for years — and we see the same issues every spring. This checklist will help you get ahead of them.
1. Clean up winter debris
Start by removing leaves, sticks, and matted grass that accumulated over winter. Leaving debris on your lawn can suffocate new growth and create conditions for lawn disease. Rake gently — your grass is still waking up.
2. Aerate your lawn
New England soils, especially in the Medway and Milford area, tend to compact over winter. Core aeration relieves compaction, improves drainage, and lets fertilizer reach the root zone. Late April to mid-May is the sweet spot for cool-season grasses common in MetroWest.
3. Overseed bare or thin patches
Winter foot traffic and ice damage often leave bare spots. Overseeding in spring fills these in before weeds take hold. Use a quality turf mix suited to Massachusetts — we recommend a blend of Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue for most Medway-area lawns.
4. Apply a spring fertilizer
Feed your lawn with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in early May. Avoid fertilizing too early — if the ground is still cold, the nutrients won't absorb properly. A soil temperature of at least 55°F is your green light.
5. Refresh your mulch beds
Spring is the ideal time to top off mulch in your planting beds. A 2–3 inch layer of fresh mulch retains moisture, regulates soil temperature, and gives your property that clean, polished look. We use premium hardwood mulch for most Medway and MetroWest properties.
